7 Reasons You Might Be A Christian Atheist

The Contradictory Life Of The Christian Atheist

Living like an atheist while professing to believe in God is now ubiquitous in America. Yes, it is paradoxical because Christians follow Christ and atheists do not believe in God, Jesus, the Bible, or eternal life.

The Christian atheist lives in a state of double-mindedness. They cling to an unsettled intellectual ambivalence concerning God while living as though God does not exist. They have no interest and do not care about God or spiritual things. They do not worship, pray, or give thanks to God. They do not attend church or study the Bible. Their lifestyles do not reflect Christian character or obedience to God. There is nothing about them that would lead anyone to think they believe God exists. Nevertheless, if you asked them, “do you believe in God? They might respond, “kind of,” or “yes,” or “sure, I’m not an atheist.”

The Christian atheist has not fully relegated God to a Santa Claus, Tooth Fairy, or Easter Bunny classification. Nevertheless, God is viewed somewhere between doubtful and nonexistent. It is fair to say that the devil is more certain of God’s existence and power, and has greater fear of God than does the Christian atheist.

To understand this paradox we must look at the Christian atheist’s lifestyle, choices, decisions, behavior, and activities that are void of God rather than an overt ironclad public denial of God. The Christian atheist lives a life that fails to follow, thank, honor, obey, love, praise, or worship God. Their lives shout “I am an atheist,” but they won’t admit it out loud.

How do you know if you are a Christian atheist?

1. The first question is, have you repented and been born again?

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the  kingdom of God unless they are born again. a ”4“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”5Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit b gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You c must be born again.’ 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” (John 3:3-8)

2. Have you followed the Lord’s command to be baptized in water?

Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

3. Do you regularly attend and participate in the local Bible-believing church, communion, and submit to the pastoral oversight and teaching?

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:23-25)

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)

4. Do you read and study the Bible and apply biblical teaching to your life?

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8)

5. Are you growing in spiritual truth and knowledge?

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. John (15:5-6)

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. 106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws. (Psalm 119:105-106)

6. Do you communicate with God and listen to Him?

These are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. c 14The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. (1 Cor. 2:10-14)

7. Do you worship God? Do you love and worship God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength?

Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ c 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ d 40All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40)

But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:23-24)

Real Christians that follow Christ are living in an active relationship with Christ. You should have answered yes to all 7 questions. If you answered no to any of the 7 questions you should get some spiritual counseling from the local pastor.

If you answered no to all 7 but still call yourself a Christian you are most likely a Christian atheist and in need of salvation.

How to Turn to God

Perhaps at this very moment, you have realized that you need the Lord in your life. Maybe you drifted away or need to be been born again? If so, you can stop right now and begin talking to God. Ask Him to forgive you for being a sinner and the life you have been living outside of His love. Surrender your life to Him, unconditionally. Call Him Lord and make Him Lord of every thought, attitude, and action. You can say, Lord Jesus, forgive me for all my sins and come into my heart and take full control of my life. I am your child from this day forward. Change my heart and mind to be Christ-like in every way. I confess Jesus as my Lord and Savior forever.
